Group Classes: Agility

Agility 1

Agility is the most popular dog sport in the world. It’s fast-paced and fun, great exercise for you and your dog, and dogs of any breed and energy level can participate.  This class will introduce agility obstacles and foundation skills.

Content: Obstacles: jumps, tunnels, wobble board, pause table, A-frame.  Skills: stays, line ups, recalls, toy drive, contact behaviors and ground work.
Class size: Max 8 dogs
Location: Shirlington Campus

Prerequisites: Puppy Agility or Basic Obedience group class at WOOFS! or equivalent positive reinforcement training center (we're sorry, PetSmart and Petco classes do not count for the prerequisite).  Dogs must be dog- and people-friendly, healthy, and able to stay quiet.  

 

Puppy Agility

Get started on basic agility skills and introduce your new puppy to lots of different confidence building challenges! We will introduce puppies to puppy-safe agility equipment. For puppies 12 weeks to 6 months old at the time the class starts.

Content: Reinforce basic skills like sit, stay and come; introduce puppy-safe jumps and obstacles; teach foundation agility skills

Prerequisites:  Puppy Kindergarten at WOOFS! - OR - any Basic Obedience group class at WOOFS! or equivalent positive reinforcement training center (we're sorry, PetSmart and Petco classes do not count for the prerequisite).  Dog must be between 12 weeks and 6 months old at the start of the class.

 

AGILITY 2 and ABOVE:  Due to high demand, Agility 2 classes and above are subject to a random draw lottery. Agility 2

Continue your introduction to agility with more advanced obstacles (dog walk, teeter, weave poles) as well as jumping and introductory handling work.

Content: Jumps, dog walk, teeter, weave poles
Class size: Max 8 dogs
Location: Shirlington Campus
Length: 7 weeks
Cost: $215
Prerequisites: Agility 1 AND permission of instructor. Dogs must be dog- and people-friendly, healthy, and able to stay quiet

 

Contacts & Weaves

 Spend the extra time needed to perfect the more complex behaviors required for stellar weave poles and reliable contacts. Can be taken concurrently with Introduction to Handling.

Content: Dog walk, teeter, A-frame, weave poles
Class size: Max 8 dogs
Location: Shirlington Campus
Length: 7 weeks

Prerequisites: Agility 1 & 2. Dogs must be able to work off leash.

 

Introduction to Handling

Learn how to handle short sequences using lead outs, front, rear and blind crosses.  Learn how to shape your dog’s path and how the choices you make affect your dog’s drive and accuracy. Can be taken concurrently with Contacts & Weaves.

Prerequisites: Agility 1 & 2. Dogs must be able to work off leash.

 

Intermediate Handling

Tackle longer sequences while adding more advanced handling moves to your repertoire. Contacts and weave poles will be included in the course work.

Class size: Max 8 dogs

Prerequisites: Intro to Handling & Contacts and Weaves. Dogs must be able to work off leash and be working on 6 upright weave poles.

 

Pre-Competition

Get ready to compete on novice level sequences and courses. Learn about how to enter a trial, memorize the course and plan your strategy, what to bring to a trial and how to deal with ring stress.  Contacts and weave poles will be included in the courses. Dogs will be able to practice going from 6 to 12 weave poles.

Prerequisites: Intermediate Handling & Contacts and Weaves.  Dogs must be able to work off leash, perform 6 upright poles and have a reliably trained contact behavior.

 

Novice Competition

Coursework for teams who are competing at the Novice / Starters level in any venue. Dogs in competition classes are expected to be able to do 12 upright weave poles and have a defined contact behavior.

Open Competition Agility

Coursework for teams who have earned a Novice / Starters title and are competing at the Open / Advanced level in any venue. Dogs in competition classes are expected to be able to do 12 upright weave poles and have a defined contact behavior.

Masters Competition Agility

Coursework for teams who have earned an Open / Advanced  title and are competing at the masters level in any venue. Dogs in competition classes are expected to be able to do 12 upright weave poles and have a defined contact behavior.

Prerequisites: Open Competition class

 

Speed & Motivation

One of the biggest agility challenges is in bringing out the full potential of your dog. This class focuses on how to have a motivated dog that wants to go FAST!  Work on developing confidence and speed, as well as identifying challenges that cause your dog to slow down. Course will be similar to AKC T2B and USDAA Steeplechase courses. There will be no weave poles.

Open / Masters with Distance

For dogs who are working sequences and discriminations at a distance. Learn how to obtain more distance on the course with layering, lateral distance and sends. Distance elements will be similar to USDAA Gamblers, AKC FAST and NADAC style box challenge.This class will have full courses and can also be taken as a regular coursework class for dogs recommended to take Open or Masters Competition Agility.
