Agility Classes


AgilityAgility is an exciting sport in which you and your dog work together to navigate an obstacle course with speed and precision. It is a great training experience whether you want to try something new with your dog, get some exercise, or go on to compete for ribbons and titles.

WOOFS! offers group classes and private training sessons with AKC Agility judge and world class Agility competitor and instructor Melissa Frye. From your first jump to your Championship, Melissa can take you all the way.

Class Descriptions:

 

Agility I

Agility is the most popular dog sport in the world. It’s fast-paced and fun, great exercise for you and your dog, and dogs of any breed and energy level can participate. Come to this class if you are new to Agility and get a solid grounding in the basics—you’ll soon be ready for more!

Content: Intro to basic obstacles like jumps, tunnels, and contacts, plus beginning handling concepts
Class size: Max 8 dogs
Location: Shirlington Campus
Length: 7 weeks
Cost: $225
Prerequisites: Basic Obedience group class at WOOFS! or equivalent positive reinforcement training center (we're sorry, PetSmart and Petco classes do not count for the prerequisite).  Dogs must be dog- and people-friendly, healthy, and able to stay quiet.  

 

Puppy Agility

Get started on basic agility skills and introduce your new puppy to lots of different confidence building challenges! We will introduce puppies to puppy-safe agility equipment. For dogs 12 months old and younger at the time the class starts.

Content: Intro to basic obstacles like jumps, tunnels, and contacts, plus beginning handling concepts

Prerequisites:  Puppy Kindergarten at WOOFS! - OR - any Basic Obedience group class at WOOFS! or equivalent positive reinforcement training center (we're sorry, PetSmart and Petco classes do not count for the prerequisite).  Dog must be under 12 months old at the start of class.  Dogs must be dog- and people-friendly, healthy, and able to stay quiet.

 

Agility II

Next step on the road toward Agility excellence. On top of an enjoyable time on the course, you will get a more attentive dog, faster responses, and a great workout for active pooches.

Content: Build your proficiency with all obstacles (including contacts and weaves) and learn handling skills

Prerequisites: Agility I AND permission of instructor. Dogs must be dog- and people-friendly, healthy, and able to stay quiet

 

Agility III - Contacts & Weaves

At this level, you will ask more of your dog in terms of focus and developting skillls . For this class, you will be working on developing skillls on the three contacts and weaving without aids. You may take this or the Agility 3 Handling first, but both must be taken before you move to Agility 4.

Content: Solidifies contact performance and work more on weave poles

Prerequisites: Agility I & II AND permission of instructor. Dogs must be able to work off leash

 

Agility III - Handling

At this level, your dog must be able to work off-leash. For this class, we focus on how to communicate and direct your dog around an agility course. We will learn handling skills such as crosses, sends, and recalls over jumps. Only equipment used will be jumps and tunnels. You may take this or the Agility 3 Contacts and Weaves first, but both must be taken before you move to Agility 4.

Prerequisites: Agility I & II AND permission of instructor. Dogs must be able to work off leash.

 

Agility IV (Pre-Competition)

This class is for dog-handler teams that are comfortable with all Agility equipment. Dogs should be close to being able to weave without aids and should be able to do dogwalk and A-frame at full height. Your dog needs to be able to work off leash and you should be comfortable with all crosses.

Prerequisites: Agility III AND permission of instructor. Dogs must be able to work off leash

 

Agility V (Pre-Competition)

This class is for dog-handler teams that are comfortable with all Agility equipment, and handlers that are comfortable running full courses. Dogs should be able to weave without aids and be able to do dogwalk and A-frame at full height.

Content: Full obstacle course
Class size: Max 8 dogs

Length: 7 weeks

Prerequisites: Agility IV AND permission of instructor. Dogs must be able to work off leash. Dogs should be able to weave without aids and be able to do all contacts at full height.

 

Novice Competition Agility

This class is for dog-handler teams that are preparing to compete at the Novice / Starters / Open / Advanced levels. Your dog must be able to perform weaves and teeter unaided.

Content: Competition-level Agility
Class size: Max 8 dogs

Length: 7 weeks

Prerequisites: Ready to start entering trials, or novice leg AND permission of instructor.

Open Competition Agility

This class is for dog-handler teams competing at the Open / Advanced levels. Courses will include contacts.

Prerequisites: Open or Advanced Leg AND permission of instructor. 

 

Open / Masters Competition Agility

A class for students at the open/advanced or Masters/elite/excellent levels. Dogs should be proficient with all equipment and handlers should be comfortable with challenging courses. Anyone in our Open or Masters Class is eligible for this class.

Prerequisites: Open or Advanced Leg AND permission of instructor. 

 

Masters Competition Agility

This class is for dog-handler teams competing at the Elite / Masters / Excellent level. Courses will include contacts, as well as significant distraction and proofing.

Prerequisites: Masters or Elite Leg AND permission of instructor. 

 

Speed & Motivation

One of the biggest challenges in agility is in bringing out the full potential of your dog. This class focuses on how to have a motivated dog that wants to go Fast! We work on developing confidence and speed, as well as identifying challenges that cause your dog to slow down.

Prerequisites: Should be at Agility 4 or higher level AND permission of instructor. 

 

Beginning Distance

For handlers just starting to work away from their dogs. Focus will be on building distance on individual obstacles, and basic distance handling skills

Prerequisites: Dog must be proficient on equipment (Agility IV or higher) AND permission of instructor. 

 

Advanced Distance

For the dog that already has good distance skills on obstacles, and is now working sequences at distance.

Prerequisites: Dog must be proficient at Novice level distance challenges (Agility IV or higher) AND permission of instructor.
